OPENING OF OAHU FEDERAL PUBLIC HOUSING WAITING LIST


NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Hawaii Public Housing Authority (HPHA) in accordance with COVID-19 Emergency, regulations outlined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the HPHA’s Federal Public Housing Admissions and Continued Occupancy Policy (ACOP), will temporarily reopen the waiting list for low-income applicants for the federal public housing program on Oahu.



The geographical waiting lists for Federal public housing that will be opened include:

Honolulu, Oahu

(Ka’ahumanu Homes, Kalakaua Homes, Kalihi Valley Homes, Kamehameha Homes, Kuhio Homes, Mayor Wright Homes, Palolo Valley Homes, Punchbowl Homes, Pu’uwai Momi, Salt Lake Apartments, Spencer House, Kalanihuia, Makamae, Makua Ali’i, Paoakalani, and Pumehana).

Leeward Oahu

(Hale Laulima, Kau’iokalani, Maili I & II, Nanakuli Homes, Waimaha-Sunfl ower, and Waipahu I & II)

Central Oahu

(Kauhale Nani, Wahiawa Terrace, and Kupuna Home O’Waialua).

Online applications will be accepted from April 16, 2021 – April 20, 2021 for eligible applicants who meet the eligibility requirements for the following bedroom sizes.

The HPHA will open the waiting lists below:

Honolulu Elderly (62 yrs and older or a person with a disability): Studios (1 person)

Honolulu Family: 2-bedroom units (with immediate vacancies at the Towers of Kuhio Park @ 1475 Linapuni Street, Honolulu)

Leeward Family: 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom units (with immediate vacancies at Waimaha Sunfl ower @ 85-186 McArthur Street, Waianae)

The online application portal will be open for five (5) days starting on Friday, April 16, 2021, at 8:00 a.m. and closing on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, at 4:30 p.m. for the Oahu Federal public housing waitlist.

Online applications will be accepted from April 23, 2021 – April 27, 2021 for eligible applicants who meet the eligibility requirements for the following bedroom sizes.


The HPHA will open the waiting lists below:

Central Elderly: (62 yrs and older or a person with a disability):Studios (1 person) (with immediate vacancies at Kupuna Home O’Waialua, 67-088 Goodale Avenue, Waialua)

Central Family: 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom units (with immediate vacancies at Wahiawa Terrace, 300 Palm Street and Kauhale Nani, 310 North Cane Street Wahiawa, Hawaii)

The online application portal will be open for fi ve (5) days starting on Friday, April 23, 2021, at 8:00 a.m. and closing on Tuesday, April 27, 2021, at 4:30 p.m. for the Oahu Federal public housing waitlist.


How do I submit an application?

Pre-applications can only be submitted online. Devices such as mobile phones and tablets with Internet access may be used; however, not all operating systems support this pre-application. No pre-applications will be accepted at the Housing Authority’s office.

  1. Be prepared by having the names, dates of birth, and social security numbers available for all persons who will be listed on your pre-application. You will need to know the monthly gross income (before taxes) for each source of income for all persons listed on your pre-application. You must list all the sources of income individually.
  2. Complete the pre-application on-line at hphaishereforyou.org by clicking on “Apply Online Here”.
  3. Submit a completed pre-application between 8:00 a.m. on April 16, 2021 and 4:30 p.m. on April 20, 2021 for the Honolulu/Leeward locations. Submit a completed pre-application between 8:00 a.m. on April 23, 2021 and 4:30 p.m. on April 27, 2021 for the Central location. Pre-applications submitted after this period will be automatically rejected by the system and not accepted. Applications not fully completed (i.e., in the middle of submission) prior to the closing will be rejected.
  4. Print your receipt or write down your Pre-Application Confirmation Number. A confirmation receipt is issued immediately after the pre-application is submitted. Print and save this confirmation.

No duplicate applications will be accepted. Any duplicate applications with same or similar household members will have both applications denied. Prior to adding any households to the waiting list, the HPHA will conduct extensive crosschecks to remove duplicate applications. Submitting a duplicate application will not improve your chances of being selected.

Does submitting a pre-application mean I’m on the wait list?

No. HPHA has adopted a lottery/random selection policy. Following the closing of the waitlist, HPHA will accept all qualifi ed applications and randomly assign a position number to be placed on the applicable waitlist. The HPHA system will randomly select up to 500 applicants for each geographic area.


The public is reminded that there is no charge to apply. Applicants are encouraged to immediately report any individual or organization who attempts to charge a fee for completion of the application process. Applicants should not respond to any fraudulent requests for an application fee.

Within approximately 10 days of waiting list closure, applicants will be sent a notice by email if they were placed on the Oahu Federal Public Housing waiting list or not. Please do not call the HPHA offi ces prior to receiving this notice as no information will be given over the phone regarding application placement.

Applications for the public housing program placed on the waiting list during the period when these emergency rules are in effect will be active up to the expiration of the emergency rules, when all remaining applications will be purged from the waitlist”.
